Global quilters wrap Be’eri in love
By YAKIR FELDMAN
Rising from the collective shock and trauma of Oct. 7, 2023, is support from all corners of the world. The response from thousands of social media followers, led and organized by a celebrated quilter, Cindy Richard, mobilized thousands of volunteers around the world to provide comfort to victims of Hamas terror.
Focus on Kibbutz Be’eri
The world has seen enough quilters in the world to rally around Israel-Hamas war. For example, volunteers flooded Sderot to prepare food (with Beth Shneer) and also shipping warm clothing, bedding and food to the south.
But the focus here is the quilts for Kibbutz Be’eri.
The quilts reach the thousands of victims of Hamas terror, murdered or injured, families destroyed, communities devastated by Hamas. Be’eri lost over 10% of its members: 101 people were murdered, including children and elderly civilians, and 31 security personnel. Many homes were burned and destroyed, kibbutz homes and infrastructure, plus the ongoing danger of rockets from Gaza. The evacuation of the kibbutz continues.
But where could one quilt make a difference? The answer is everywhere.
Quilts with a purpose
Few are more than simple blankets. Created by talented quilters worldwide, they are acts of love and solidarity. They wrap families in warmth and care, providing emotional comfort as well as physical.
Many quilts could cost thousands of shekels to purchase.
Be’eri in Hatzorim
The Oct. 7 tragedy left Be’eri devastated. Most of its members were relocated temporarily to Kibbutz Hatzerim, near Be’er Sheva. About 300 housing units were established for the Be’eri community, with a community center for the relocated kibbutzniks far away from home but on a large scale.
Gratitude
Acknowledged with gratitude and affection on behalf of the Be’eri community.
